The latest H&M drop is a cool mix of skate and surf-inspired staples devoted to celebrating the mission of Black Girls Skate. The non-profit works to create equity, safety, and visibility for skaters who identify as women and/or non-binary, Black, African, or of color, and the beautiful campaign serves to uplift that community.
Inside, you’ll find Black Girl Skate’s Emily Williams, Jhanaiya Smith-Butler starring in the campaign alongside Camryn Silva, as they show off the summer-perfect lineup – think high-waist athletic-inspired shorts, tie-dye tanks, sweatshirts, and zip-up swim, all crafted with a hearty helping of nostalgia. It’s an homage to the lifestyle of skaters and surfers, as well as a reminder about the importance of personal style and how fashion can make us feel. As Camryn Silva revealed in an interview about the collection with H&M Magazine, “Fashion always seemed out of reach to me because of how I used to struggle with my identity growing up. It was always something that upset me up until recently when I stopped caring what people thought.” In providing a space to celebrate Black Girls Skate, the collection is also offering up the reminder to all of us to embrace our authentic selves, in fashion and otherwise – and we’re here for that message.
